Although autism is a lifelong neurodevelopmental disorder, research on adult outcomes is quantitatively and qualitatively limited. A diagnosis of autism includes specification of any co-occurrence with language impairment and/or intellectual impairment and while the intra- and inter-individual variability of (linguistic and non-linguistic) cognitive abilities in autistic children is well-documented, equivalent knowledge is lacking for the adult population. In this talk, I will provide a comprehensive overview of current research on the morphosyntactic and phonological skills of verbal autistic adults and discuss the intersecting relationship between structural language and nonverbal intelligence from a developmental perspective.
